Human Trafficking Awareness Day

Today I'm breaking the cycle of book-related blog posts to write about something incredibly important. January 11th is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

(I got all my facts and my graphics from the A21 Campaign website. They're an amazing organization that does so much to fight HT, and you should definitely look into it if you're interested in donating to a great cause.)

I think the big question is: What is human trafficking? Human trafficking is modern day slavery. It is the illegal trade of human beings for labor or sex trafficking. It shouldn't exist, but it does. It is still a major force in the world today.

Some facts and stats:
  • More people are slaves today than at any other point in human history.
  • 27 MILLION people are enslaved around the globe.
  • The average age of a trafficking victim is 12 years old.
  • And you know what else? Only 1-2% of victims are ever rescued.
Crazy, right? Crazy and totally awful. But there are things we can do to help abolish modern day slavery. Find out what the A21 Campaign does to try and get rid of HT and find out ways you can help here. You can also read some amazing stories from survivors on their site.

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela

If you'd like to look into more organizations that work to end human trafficking, some websites to look into are: End Slavery Now, Not for Sale Campaign, and Abolition Internation, now Hope for Justice

You don't have to donate to get involved - awareness is a big thing. So learn about it, talk about it, tweet about it, Facebook about it, anything! Tell people about it, and we can help end human trafficking.
